Klay Thompson comes from a sporting family. Julie and Mychal Thompson are his parents. His father was the Portland Trail Blazers' first-round pick in the 1978 NBA Draft, and he played 12 seasons in the league, winning two NBA Championships with the Los Angeles Lakers. His mother was a volleyball player at the University of San Francisco. His parents, along with his two brothers, raised him. Mychel, the older brother, appeared in five games for the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2011-12 and spent four seasons (2013-14 through 2016-17) with the Santa Cruz Warriors, Golden State's NBA G League affiliate. Trayce, his younger brother, was drafted in the second round of the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft by the Chicago White Sox and has since played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Oakland Athletics, and Cleveland Indians.

Klay Thompson was born in Los Angeles, California, United States on February 8, 1990. At a young age of two his family moved to Lake Oswego, Oregon. He met future NBA player Kevin Love there and played Little League with him as friends and teammates. When Thompson was 14, his family moved to Ladera Ranch, California. In 2008, he graduated from Rancho Santa Margarita's Santa Margarita School.Thompson was a standout player for Orange County, earning All-Area Second and Third Team honors in his junior year. He contributed to SMCHS's 30-5 record and Division III State Championship, including a record-breaking seven 3-pointers. Thompson attended Washington State University, where he was a leading scorer with an average of 12.5 points per game. He averaged 19.6 points per game in his sophomore season and was named All-Pac-10's First Team.
