Criticism
Even though Atlee's films are very successful commercially, critics have attacked him for using too similar stories that have been done to death. Examples of this criticism date back to the 1980s Tamil film industry. Raja Rani, for example, has been compared to an improved version of Mouna Ragam (1986), while Theri (1990) has been compared to Chatriyan (1990). Mersal has been compared to an upgraded version of Apoorva Sagodharargal (1989). Bigil has been compared to "Chak De! India (2007) on steroids." However, Atlee has responded that he has won every case despite being sued for plagiarism multiple times.
