Michael attended Wilmington's Emsley A. Laney High School, where he became interested in sports such as basketball, baseball, and football. He was chosen for the McDonald's All-American Team, the best of all high school basketball teams, after impressing everyone.
As a senior in high school, he played for leagues such as North Carolina, Virginia, Duke, and Syracuse. Finally, in 1981, he was offered a basketball scholarship by the University of North Carolina based on his performance.
At the university, he was mentored by legendary basketball coach Dean Smith, and he was named Atlantic Coast Conference Freshman of the Year. His jump shot was instrumental in the team's NCAA Championship victory over Georgetown University in 1982.

In 1984, he dropped out of university to enter the NBA Draught. In the 1984 Summer Olympics, he was a member of a gold-medal-winning team that included Sam Perkins, Steve Alford, and Patrick Ewing.
During the 1984-87 season, Jordan was a member of the Chicago Bulls, a team that had little success, and he proved his worth with an above-average points per game of 28.2.

From 1987 to 1990, he led his team to the first round of the NBA Playoffs in the first season, and to the finals in the next two. They knocked the Cleveland Cavaliers, New York Knicks, and Milwaukee Bucks out of the tournament.
In the following season, 1990-91, Michael Jordan helped the Bulls cruise to the Eastern Conference finals. His team faced the Detroit Pistons again, but this time it was the Chicago Bulls who won. The winners defeated the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA finals, winning their first championship in the game's history.
In the Summer Olympics of 1992, he was once again a member of the so-called "dream team," a gold-medal-winning group of talented players that included Magic Johnson, David Robinson, and Larry Bird.

Michael Jordan's Unexpected Retirement
After a difficult playoff series against the New York Knicks, the Bulls faced the Phoenix Suns for the NBA championship in 1993. When it was all said and done, Jordan was named playoff MVP once more, and Chicago had won its third straight championship. Jordan's father, James, was murdered by two men during a robbery attempt that summer. Jordan was bereaved, and the death of his father, combined with media reports about his gambling, prompted him to retire from professional basketball in October.
