Poonam Dhillon was born on 18 April 1962 in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India. She is an Indian actress and a politician. She started working since 1978 and her first film was Trishul. Poonam mother was a school principle and her father was an aeronautical engineer in the Indian Air Force. She has two siblings and both her siblings are doctor. She completed her schooling from Carmel Convent, Chandigarh and she completed her graduation after joining the films at the age of 16. Her husband is Ashok Thakeria and they have two children one daughter and one son, Her daughter name is Paloma and son name is Anmol.

Dhillon was crowned Miss Young India 1978 and that time she got the fame. She was noticed by director Yash Chopra who gave her role in the film Trishul which was released in 1978, in that movie her song dance "Gapoochi Gapoochi Gum Gum" with Sachin Pilgaonkar became very famous at that time. Yash Chopra then gave Poonam the title role in Norrie which was released in 1979 in the opposite of Farooq Sheikh. Till now Poonam has worked in over 90 hindi films. She was one of the highest paid actress of hindi cinema because of her performance and fan following. Poonam and Rajesh Khanna has worked in six films together Red Rose (1980 Film), Awam, Jai Shiv Shankar, Zamana, Dard and Nishaan.
Her mother name is Gurucharan Kaur Dhillon and her father name is Amrik Singh Dhillon, her siblings name are Baljinder Singh Dhillon and Rishma Dhillon-Pai. Poonam participated in Big Boss in 2009. In Sony TV series Ek Nayi Pehchaan Poonam played the lead role and her character name in the series was Sharda Modi it was released in 2013, in this series she basically played the role of uneducated but the ideal wife of a rich businessman. She has also done theatre with several shows in United States and Dubai. Poonam also appeared in regional films such as Bengali, Telugu, Kannada and Tamil.
In 2004, Poonam joined Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) and later in 2019 she was appointed as vice president of the Mumbai unit of the party. She was appointed as one of four members to the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal. Poonam launched an event management and film production company called "Poetic Justice Films and Entertainment Pvt. Ltd in 2014 with Aneel Murarka who is an industrialist and Samir Tanna a choreographer. She participated in a show supporting the "Save and Empower the Girl Child" cause.
She is currently 63 years old. Poonam is also known for starting Vanity Van culture in hindi cinema, the legacy of Vanity Van started by her only, she basically started with not that luxury Vanity Van which we now look many stars have but she was the only first to stand and start.
